BA-EXT Exterior/Weather Resistant Access Panel
The BA-EXT is a non-rated, weather-resistant access panel built for exterior walls. Its 20 GA aluminum cover, welded aluminum frame, and extruded santoprene gasket give mechanical contractors a durable, corrosion-resistant access point that withstands outdoor conditions.
Unlike panels built for a single wall type, the BA-EXT mounts in exterior or interior walls and supports left- or right-hand operation. A continuous stainless steel piano hinge and compression latch come standard, so the panel is ready to install without additional hardware.
Why Do Contractors Choose BA-EXT Exterior/Weather Resistant Access Panel?
- Weather-resistant design: The extruded santoprene gasket seals the door's perimeter against the elements. The welded aluminum frame and 20 GA aluminum cover resist corrosion over time.
- Built for exterior and interior walls: You can mount the BA-EXT in exterior masonry, framed walls, or interior walls. It suits new construction and existing wall installations.
- Left- or right-hand operation: The continuous stainless steel piano hinge supports both orientations, so you can position the door to suit the wall layout.
- Insulated for temperature control: The 1½" polyurethane insulation reduces heat transfer through the panel, which is crucial when the access point sits near climate-controlled areas.
- Locking options available: The standard compression latch accepts a key lock. You can choose a locking handle, a non-locking handle, or mortise lock preparation if the project calls for a different configuration.

What Comes Standard and What Can Be Configured?
Every BA-EXT ships with the following as standard:
- 20 GA aluminum cover
- Welded aluminum frame (inner and outer assembly)
- Continuous stainless steel piano hinge
- Compression latch (key-lockable)
- 1½" polyurethane insulation
- Extruded santoprene gasket
- Natural aluminum finish; field-paintable
The following options must be specified at the time of order and are not included as standard:
- ¼" turn latch
- Locking handle (exterior only; 1 per door)
- Non-locking handle (dual-acting; opens from inside or outside)
- Mortise lock preparation (1 1/8")
What Should You Confirm Before Ordering BA-EXT?
- Rough opening: Cut the wall opening 3/8" (9 mm) larger than the door size on each dimension. For example, a 12" x 12" door requires a 12-3/8" x 12-3/8" opening.
- Wall type: The BA-EXT is non-rated. Confirm your wall isn’t fire-rated before ordering.
- Wall substrate: The panel installs in framed walls and masonry walls, including new and existing masonry construction.
- Latch or handle option: The panel ships with a standard compression latch. If your project requires a locking handle, non-locking handle, ¼" turn latch, or mortise lock preparation, specify that before ordering.
- Production lead time: Lead time depends on your configuration and size. Request a quote to confirm production and ship dates.
Installation Notes
- Before inserting the panel, confirm the wall opening is cut 3/8" (9 mm) larger than the door size on each dimension and that the wall surface is flat and even.
- Insert the panel into the opening and check that it sits level. Mark the position of the pre-drilled holes on the wall, then remove the panel.
- Pre-drill the marked holes.
- Apply a bead of silicone caulk on the back of the exposed frame flange.
- Reinsert the panel into the opening. Install it right- or left-hinged, with the locking mechanism on either side, not the top or bottom.
- Use temporary shims to maintain the panel's position and squareness while securing. Fasten the frame to the wall using plastic concrete anchors and screws. Tighten or loosen screws until the frame sits flush with the door.
- After securing, close the door. You can apply an optional bead of silicone caulk around the frame to fill any voids between the wall opening and the door frame.
Who Installs BA-EXT and Where Is It Used?
Mechanical contractors, facility managers, and building owners install the BA-EXT where a weather-resistant access point is needed in an exterior or interior wall.
Common applications include:
- Exterior building walls: Access to HVAC, electrical, or mechanical components in exterior-facing walls on commercial and industrial buildings.
- Masonry construction: New or existing masonry walls where a corrosion-resistant panel is required.
- Interior mechanical rooms: Where the same weather-resistant and insulated construction is needed for interior access points near climate-controlled areas.
- Industrial and institutional facilities: Repeatable access to infrastructure in environments that demand durable, low-maintenance hardware.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What rough opening do I need for BA-EXT?
You need a rough opening that's 3/8" (9 mm) larger than the door size on each dimension. For a 12" x 12" door, the opening should measure 12-3/8" x 12-3/8".
- Can BA-EXT be installed on a fire-rated wall?
No. The BA-EXT is a non-rated panel. If your project requires a fire-rated assembly, you can browse our fire-rated access products to find the right fit.
- Can the non-locking handle be operated from both sides of the door?
The dual-acting, non-locking handle lets you open the door from either the inside or the outside. However, you need to specify this option when ordering.
- Is BA-EXT available in custom sizes?
Yes. Standard sizes run from 8" x 8" up to 24" x 36". Request a custom quote if your project requires a different dimension.
- Can BA-EXT be painted in the field?
Yes. The panel ships with a natural aluminum finish and is ready for field-applied paint. Follow the finish manufacturer's cleaning and preparation instructions before applying.
