When it comes to ceilings, whether it be in a residential or commercial space, there are many factors to consider, everything from budget to look to is there more to the ceiling than being a cover over one’s head

We examine the pros and cons of drop-down ceilings, also known as suspended ceilings which are common in many commercial buildings. Though they are found in residences, they typically are used in many basements of homes because of their make, cost and simplicity.

Here is a look at the pros and cons of drop-down ceilings and if this is the right choice for your next building project.

Pros:

Easy Installation

To install a drop-down ceiling like BA-PFI Fire-Rated Insulated Access Door with Exposed Flange, one needs to install metal tracks suspended above the ground and then panels are layered between the tracks – this is how the name “drop-down” or suspended came to be. Though to some it may seem simple to simply suspend the panels, the track work may require some assistance from a knowledgeable contractor. Research

Soundproofing

Depending on where the drop-down ceiling is installed, this choice for a ceiling can enhance the soundproofing between levels. While one would think that it would make the sound louder as there is a space between the floor and actual ceiling, drop-downs can be insulated with fiberglass, therefore, enhancing the sound absorption.

Concealing of wires, ductwork and imperfections

For the most part, drop-down ceilings are installed as a means to access ductwork, wires and any other necessary building parts that require maintenance or check-ups. Similar to the access panel that provides easy and simple access, drop-down ceilings do the same. While they are not as aesthetically appealing as an access door, they can be utilized to allow for easy access.

Cons

Loss of height and space

Given the nature of a drop-down ceiling and how they are installed, the space they are installed may seem smaller in height and overall space. This can sometimes be hard when it comes to machinery, furniture and other necessities that are slightly taller than a standard room, building.

Quality

While drop downs are a great cost-effective solution for a building or space, their quality is jeopardized. They can over time begin to deteriorate and change color's making its appeal very off-putting. This can be prevented with routine maintenance of the overall ceilings and panels and ensure that there are no leaks leading to condensation or mold build-up.

Not strong or sturdy

A sacrifice that comes with installing a drop-down ceiling is that not only is the quality jeopardized for practicality but also the durability is as well. Because the ceilings allow for access to the wires and ductwork they need to be light which can impact the quality of the panels itself.

Weigh the Options

When it comes to renovations or upgrades and considering a ceiling such as a drop-down it is important to consider the pros and cons. While it is a cost-effective solution that is practical in that it allows for maintenance, it is important to consider the functionality and safety. They are not as strong as traditional ceilings and therefore, should there be a natural disaster they can easily be destroyed.

Drop downs are a great choice for basic buildings and practicality – just remember to ensure it meets all your building needs.
